Building a Community of Caring

Gaston Hospice recognizes that quality care extends well beyond providing basic hospice services. In keeping with our mission of building a community of caring, we have developed, in conjunction with local agencies, several special programs.

Robin Johnson Inpatient Facility

Special Programs

In responding to the specific needs of the community, Gaston Hospice has designed several programs to further enhance the quality of life for our patients and their families. Please follow the links below to learn more about these additional Gaston Hospice services:

Gaston Palliative Care

Gaston Palliative Care is a division of Gaston Hospice that offers palliative care to residents of Gaston County long term care facilities and, currently, limited provision of palliative care for the homebound patient. Palliative care is a medical specialty focused on improving the quality of life for people living with serious illness, regardless of their age or prognosis.  Palliative care focuses on relieving symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, agitation and difficulty sleeping.  It helps the patient gain strength to carry on with activities of daily life.  Although hospice care and palliative care have similar goals, i.e. pain and symptom management, they differ because palliative care is not necessarily end-of-life care.  Hospice care is focused on providing quality care to people in the last months of life when they can no longer benefit from treatments meant to cure their illness.  Palliative care can be provided from the time of diagnosis and is not mutually exclusive from curative treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy and dialysis.  In fact, palliative care often improves the ability to tolerate the side effects of curative medical treatments.  Both hospice and palliative care are provided by a team of experts, including palliative care doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, nutritionists and therapists.  For additional information about the Gaston Hospice Palliative care program, call our Palliative Care line at 704-865-5838.

Hospice in the Nursing Home

Although home is the traditional and preferred setting to provide hospice services, some people are unable to remain at home. Gaston Hospice has established partnerships with most Gaston County nursing facilities/health care centers to provide services. These services include pain and symptom management; education for patient, family and facility staff; social, spiritual and psychological support for residents, family members and facility staff who desire it.
