The Robin Johnson House

A Community of Caring

Imagine a place where highly skilled clinical care is administered around the clock in a comfortable, home-like setting; where a patient can be surrounded by the people they love.  The Robin Johnson House is just such a place.  The twelve-bed inpatient facility located at 5005 Shepherd's Way Drive in Dallas, NC, was built especially for Gaston Hospice patients who are not able to be cared for at home.

Since 1981, Gaston Hospice has helped terminally ill patients and their families face the challenges of their last days with dignity, courage and strength.  It has always been the goal of Gaston Hospice to help patients stay at home until the end whenever possible. Most people facing a terminal illness prefer to be cared for in their home.

However, for various reasons, staying at home is not always an option.  Patients may be placed at the Robin Johnson House as an alternative to hospitalization to manage their pain and symptoms, or for respite care situations when their family needs extra support for a few days.  In these situations, care planning begins immediately with a goal of helping families get their loved one back home as soon as they are ready.  Other patients who lack a practical caregiver situation may stay at the Robin Johnson House until they die.

The 15,000 square foot Robin Johnson House is designed to be a place of comfort and peace with a professional clinical staff on duty 24 hours a day.  Visitors are welcome at all hours and accomodations are available for a family member to spend the night in a patient's room if they desire.

The Robin Johnson House includes spacious patient rooms, each with private bath and family sitting area, as well as a sleeper chair.  A lovely dining area provides a comfortable place for patients and their families to enjoy a meal together.  Food is prepared by staff in the central kitchen and extra meals can be provided for visiting loved ones with some advance notice.  There are several areas where families can visit with each other or just sit quietly and watch television or read.  A children's play room offers toys, coloring books, videos and other activities for visiting children.  A garden and walking trail invite patients and their families for a stroll outdoors.

The Robin Johnson House was constructed and furnished thanks to the generous contributions of Gaston County's citizens and foundations.  The House continues to rely on donations to provide care for all those who need it, not just those who can afford it.  Several programs are available to honor and remember a loved one. Further information on giving opportunities is available on the 'Want to Help?' page as well as in the Gaston Hospice development office.
